Notes: I have compiled information for 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003.  Data was provided by a top ranking lifeguard officer or beach manager of each agency.  Every effort was made to insure accuracy, but I do not accept responsibility for errors.  If you wish your agency to be included in future surveys, but have been omitted, please contact me at spike@spikefowler.com or (732) 774-2253.

 

            To my knowledge, this is the most comprehensive wage/salary survey ever conducted for New Jersey ocean lifeguards.  Data collection was greatly enhanced by the direct mail format and the process will be improved for 2004.

 

            The survey is made available to all participants and particularly lifeguard leaders.  The survey is also available via e-mail as a Microsoft Word attachment.  Although primarily intended for lifeguard leaders in New Jersey, I will provide a copy to anyone making a request providing they indicate their name and agency.

 

            Special thanks are particularly due the South Jersey Lifeguard Chiefs’ Association, many of whom participated for the first time in the survey.  Of course, thanks to all who participated in this and previous iterations.

 

            Feedback is always welcome.  Some of the data fields are blank with a “n/a” as I changed the parameters part way through the survey.  They should be fixed with the 2004 report.  If there are data fields you feel should be included in the next survey, please let me know.

Statistics are based on the 44 agencies surveyed.  This includes 6 beach clubs, 1 federal beach, 1 state beach, 1 county beach, and 35 municipal beaches.  It represents a constituency of 2,350 ocean lifeguards in the State of New Jersey.

            Although this survey covers most ocean beaches in New Jersey, it does not cover every beach.  I am trying to accomplish that for 2004.  I would appreciate help in identifying beaches omitted.  For example, there are several beach services omitted such as AquaServ in Monmouth and Ocean County.  I would like to include them for 2004, but need contact names and numbers.

 

            Most north shore agencies quote figures on an hourly basis; most south shore agencies on a per diem basis.  I have done my best in trying to identify a common denominator - hourly wages, but that can be difficult as per diem rates are calculated by varying standards (some 6 hours, other 7.5 or 8 hours).  Obviously season salaries are impossible to convert to wages.

 

            Cross tabulations were not compiled.  In other words, mean wage for beach clubs, vs. mean wage for municipal beaches, etc.

 

            Yet another phenomena is calculating yearly increments.  In some cases there is a simple move - increment to increment.  In others, there is an across the board contractual increment, plus a step increment.  This skews the actual increase a lifeguard will receive.
